GASAM Meets the Gambian delegates attending the 8th Africa Students and Youth Summit

In the afternoon of December 20th, 2019, the Gambia Students' Association in Morocco (GASAM) met with the Gambian delegates attending the 8th ASY summit held in Rabat, Morocco.

In attendance at the side event meeting was the executive and general members of GASAM from Batch Snow, the Principal of the Gambia College Mr. Aboubacarr Jallow, The President and Executive of the National Union of Gambian Students (NUGS), The president and Executive members of the University of The Gambia Students' Union (UTGSU), The President of American International University - Gambia Students Union (AIUSU), The president of GTTI and Gambian representative at the All Africa Students Union Mr. Ansumana Bojang.

The theme of the meeting was the state of Gambian Job Markets.

Welcoming the Gambian delegates to the kingdom of Morocco, Mr. Momodou Muctarr Jallow, the President of GASAM highlighted the activities the association undertakes to serve as ambassadors at large for The Gambia as well as how the association serve as a support mechanism for it's members.

Mr Jallow also explained the challenges faced by students in the kingdom like the late arrival of the National stipend and its insufficiency and few others they face in The Gambia upon completion of their studies like job insecurity.

Over ther years, the association has learnt that the scarcity of jobs in The Gambia has been a key factor why fresh Gambian graduates abroad chose to say away from The Gambia in search of better Jobs.

For his part, Mr. Ansumana Bojang, the Gambian representative at the All Africa Students Union Executive explained how young people can be their own job creators should incase they couldn't find employment upon their return.

Mr. Bojang and Mr. Alpha Lowe, President of the UTGSU 2017-2018 encouraged the students to be steadfast in their studies as they are the beacon of home for The Gambia.

The President of UTGSU, AIUSU, GTTI and NUGS all shared similar sentiments and pledged their solidarity and support to GASAM to help ease some of the challenges Gambian Students face in The kingdom when ever they could.

Mr. Aboubacarr Jallow, the Principal of the Gambia College reminded the students of how important their education is and the need to take it seriously. He went further to state that life out of home (The Gambia) is never easy and Students all over the world face similar or worst challenges.

Mr. Jallow equally showed support to the association and pledged to help relate some of the challenges highlighted to MOHERST through the GASAM focal persons in The Gambia.

The Gasamians on their part thank the delegates for taking time to meet them and showed gratitude for the pledges made.

They also made recommendations for the inclusion of broader representation of Gambian students in the upcoming NUGS constitution that will cater for Gambian students abroad.
